Topic: Nowadays celebrities earn more than politicians. What are the reasons for this? Is it a positive or negative development?

A trend is being noticed lately wherein top-rated movie star, cricketers, authors, and so on get paid crores of rupees for 5 minutes of their time. Such earnings surpass those of other professions, especially politics. This is happening mainly due to the fan following, as these famous personalities can draw more crowds. It is a negative development because a wrong impression is being conveyed to the impressionable youth.

To initiate, one often reads news articles proclaiming that a popular actor was paid Rs 5 crores for inaugurating a store/restaurant, or a best-selling author got a similar amount of money to be the chief guest in a school/college’s annual day or convocation. This is happening because such people have a huge fan following, hence if they are invited, press coverage is ensured and the product gets free publicity. For example, a well-known mobile store in my hometown recently opened a new shop in a commercial area. They invited a famous singer Darshan Raval for the inaugural ceremony. As a result, almost 75% of the public had visited the store on the first day and the sales tripled.

However, I vehemently opine that this is a negative development because children and teenagers may feel its better to become a superstar or a sports person instead of opting for politics as the former get paid handsomely for a few minutes of their time, while the latter must raise money for election campaigns. For example, Virat Kohli reportedly charges between ₹7.50 crore and ₹10 crore for a brand endorsement. He also charges ₹8.9 crore per Instagram post and ₹2.5 crore per Twitter post. Hence, many children don’t focus on their studies and spend more time on sports or acting/drama school, without realising the amount of struggle and tenacity required to become a celebrity.

Stating the compendium, celebrities are ‘crowd-pullers’ hence they are paid a lot for an appearance, while politicians often have to pay money to get people to attend political gatherings. This is a negative trend it sends a wrong message to youngsters. (340 words).
